ESOL FAQs

These friendly classes are for adult learners whose first language is not English. They will give you the skills and confidence to use more accurate grammar and a wider vocabulary. Learners work towards their personal learning goals.

All four skills – Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening- are taught throughout the course. You will be able to take ESOL Skills for Life exams at the end of each semester; the cost of these is included in the course fees.

We offer classes at all levels from Beginner to Advanced:

If you want to join an ESOL course, you must attend an Assessment/Enrolment session at Woking College. You will meet one of our teachers, who will assess your spoken and written English and tell you when the appropriate lessons take place.

Please note that assessment/enrolment will take at least 1 hour. If you have young children, you are advised to bring another adult with you.

You must bring your passport, fees, UKVI sharecode and a paper copy of your Universal Credit statement.

  • Recent Universal Credit full statement ?
  • 3 months of payslip in your name if you are not receiving Universal Credit ?
  • Other evidence of income such as Self Assessment tax return ?

If you can’t provide the documents mentioned, please bring what you have to the enrolment session.  We can try and help you, but it will take longer.  Documents must have your name on them.

  • UKVI Sharecode:  Please use your UKVI e-visa login to get a new sharecode for us. It must start with S.  We can’t use sharecodes that start with R or W.
  • Universal Credit Statement:  Please use the Universal Credit website to save a pdf of your most recent statement.  We need to see the deductions section
  • Payslips:  If you are paid weekly, this will be at least 12 payslips, or 3 if you are paid monthly.  You can save these as pdfs or as picture files and upload them
  • Tax return:  If you are self employed, we can look at your last Self Assessment tax return to see your annual income.

 

 

 

You will be asked to do some reading and writing tests. You will meet one of our teachers, who will assess your spoken and written English and tell you when the appropriate lessons take place. Don’t forget a pen!

Your fees will depend upon your income and you will need to show us evidence of your income.

You can pay by credit/debit card or bank transfer.

 

 

Yes, you can come to classes.  You will be eligible for reduced price classes.

Yes, you can come to classes.  You will be eligible for reduced price classes, the funding for adult classes is not included in ‘public funds’.

Yes, you can come to classes after 6 months of starting your asylum claim.  You will be eligible for reduced price classes.  If you are only receiving asylum support from the government and are not allowed to work, the classes will be free.  If you are allowed to work, you will need to prove your income level.

You can come to classes, but you will have to pay the full price.

No, we do not have online or blended classes.

Our classes include British Values and citizenship topics but we don’t specifically have a citizenship class.

There are adult GCSE English and Maths classes at Woking College.  Please email admissions@woking.ac.uk if you are interested in these.

 

We can’t usually transfer students.  You would be able to join the next enrolment sessions in September or January to join the next 15 week semester.  Please complete this form to register your interest so we can let you know about the next enrolment session.

 

Our adult ESOL classes are for people aged over 18.  If you are interested in ESOL classes for someone aged 16 to 18, please contact admissions@woking.ac.uk

GCSE Maths and English for Adults

These courses are for adults wanting to take GCSE English or Maths for the first time or for those who have not achieved a grade 4 in these subjects.

    • These nationally recognised qualifications are required for many careers and for higher education courses.
    • If you are interested in these courses please e mail admissions@woking.ac.uk stating which courses you would like to study.

You must also come to an Information/ Assessment session (please refer to the Adult Education Brochure above) where you will meet with a teacher and take an assessment test to make sure that this is the right course for you.

    • You must bring your passport, fees, UKVI sharecode and a paper copy of your Universal Credit statement to the assessment.

Assessment and lessons take place at Woking College.

Once you have been accepted, you will be required to attend one lesson per week for 30 weeks.
