Sociology

Sociology is the study of how society is organised and why different social groups experience life in the way that they do. The study of sociology provides valuable insights into how human behaviour is shaped and influenced by the societal forces of group interaction. It offers an enlightening way of seeing and understanding the social world in which we live, looking beyond the taken-for-granted views of reality, to provide a deeper, more illuminating and challenging understanding of social life.

What skills will I develop?

You will develop a sociological knowledge base that enables you to construct coherent sociological arguments helping you to improve your capacity in oral and written expression; critical analysis and evaluation.

What topics will I study?

Component 1 – Examination: Education with Theory and Methods (2 hours – 33%)

  • Section A: Education (short answer and extended writing)
  • Section B: Methods in Context (extended writing)
  • Section C: Theory and Methods (extended writing)

Component 2 – Examination: Topics in Sociology (2 hours – 33%)

  • Section A: Families & Households (extended writing)
  • Section B: Beliefs in Society (extended writing)

Component 3 – Examination: Crime & Deviance with Theory and Methods (2 hours – 33%)

  • Section A: Crime & Deviance (short answer and extended writing)
  • Section B: Theory & Methods (extended writing)

Where does the course lead?

Careers for which Sociology has significant relevance including teaching; journalism; the police; social work; nursing; law and the civil service. Many students progress to University to study Sociology; Psychology; Education; Social Administration; Politics; Law or Criminology.
