Further Mathematics

This qualification awards you with an A Level in Mathematics after the first year, and an A level in Further Mathematics after the second year. Please see the Mathematics leaflet for a list of first year units.

This course develops the subject areas covered in A Level Mathematics in to new concepts, such as imaginary numbers, differential equations and matrices. Decision Mathematics is also introduced, in the second year of study; this field deals with representing problems in a convenient way and using algorithmic approaches to solving them, it is a really useful tool for dealing with logistics, project management and computer science. The techniques learned in both the pure and decision mathematics can be used to solve complex problems in areas such as engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, management and economics.

What skills will I develop?

You will develop your mathematical skills further, particularly with regards to algebra and calculus.

You will learn advanced mathematical concepts, such as complex numbers and matrices, which are applicable in a variety of contexts.

You will learn how to model situations mathematically, including the use of Decision Mathematics, as well as developing your problem-solving and reasoning skills.

Ultimately, A Level Further Mathematics will teach you essential skills that allow you to apply mathematics to the real world, as well as more abstract concepts that are invaluable for supporting the transition to a degree in Mathematics or related disciplines.

A Level Further Mathematics is highly regarded by leading universities and employers, who value the academic rigour and challenge that it presents.

What topics will I study?

This qualification awards you with an A Level in Mathematics after the first year; the following topics are assessed at the end of the second year over four equally weighted 1 hour, 30 minute examinations:

  • Core Pure Mathematics 1&2: Complex numbers; Proof by induction; Vectors and Matrices; Polar equations; Hyperbolic functions; Series; Advanced calculus techniques

  • Further Pure Mathematics 1: Further vectors; Reducible differential equations; Numerical Methods; Inequalities, Taylor series; Limits; Conic sections

  • Decision Mathematics 1: Algorithms and graph theory; Algorithms on graphs; Route inspection; Traveling salesman problem; Critical path analysis; Linear programming

  • Component 1 – Examination: Core Pure Paper 1 (1 hour, 30 minutes – 25%)
  • Component 2 – Examination: Core Pure Paper 2 (1 hour, 30 minutes – 25%)
  • Component 3 – Examination: Further Pure 1 (1 hour, 30 minutes – 25%)
  • Component 4 – Examination: Decision (1 hour, 30 minutes – 25%)

Where does the course lead?

This course is especially useful if you intend to study higher education courses in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science and Economics at renowned universities.

ADVANCED MATHS PROGRAMME

Students applying for mathematics and related degrees at Oxford and Cambridge are usually required to sit challenging entrance assessments. These assessments are predominantly focused on mathematics. At Woking College we help prepare students for these assessments through weekly sessions beginning in Year 12 and continuing into Year 13. In recent years, numerous Woking College Alumni have gone on to study mathematics and other related degrees at Oxford and Cambridge. Woking College students are also incredibly successful at the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, with many students achieving a gold certificate and even qualifying for later rounds, including the British Mathematical Olympiad.

Although not always a pre-requisite, the majority of students continuing to study mathematics and related degrees at leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, study A Level Further Mathematics.
