(Available as equivalent to 1 or 2 A Levels)

This course is for those who have a keen interest sports, and wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of this exciting topic area.   This course is made up of many different units, including, Anatomy and Physiology, Leadership and Fitness Training. All units are delivered through a mixture of theory and practical lessons and assessed through coursework or external exam.

What skills will I develop?

Alongside the practical sports skills delivered as part of this course you will develop your ability to work both independently and as part of a team in order to produce coursework. 

You will also be assisted to improve your research skills as well as your overall IT and communication skills.

You will lead sports activities and assess fitness levels of individuals who are aspiring towards excellence in sport.

What topics will I study?

This course is available as both a Subsidiary Diploma (equiv. 1 A Level) and Diploma (equiv. 2 A Levels). Topics for both options are outlined below:

BTEC Subsidiary Diploma

  • Unit 1: Principals of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  • Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness
  • Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Unit 5: Sports Coaching
  • Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Unit 8: Practical Team Sports
  • Unit 26: Work Experience in Sport

BTEC Diploma

All above units, plus:

  • Unit 4: Fitness Training and Programming
  • Unit 6: Sports Development
  • Unit 9: Practical Individual Sport
  • Unit 15: Instructing Physical Activity
  • Unit 18: Sports Injuries

Where does the course lead?

Whether the student intends to continue with further study, pursue a future in sport itself or has merely a passing interest, the skills, such as time management, planning, teamwork and leadership which are gained on this course are valuable to future careers, and are highly sought by employers.
