Physics
Physics aims to describe and explain the universe. Topics covered draw on everything from the ideas of Newton and Einstein to contemporary theories of particles and astrophysics. You will study the content using a variety of methods including experimental work, problem-solving, and use of computers. Most of all, the aim is to make Physics relevant and interesting. Anyone with strong maths skills and an interest in how and why things work will enjoy this subject.
What skills will I develop?
You will develop the ability to:
- Perform experiments safely and accurately.
- Present, analyse and evaluate data in order to confirm theories and ideas.
- Use mathematical models to represent ideas in Physics.
- Solve mathematical problems.
- Use and apply scientific vocabulary.
- Work independently or in a group.
- Use Excel and data logging software.
What topics will I study?
- Module 1: Development of practical skills in physics
- Module 2: Foundations of physics
- Module 3: Forces and motion
- Module 4: Electrons, waves and photons
- Module 5: Newtonian world and astrophysics
- Module 6: Particles and medical physics
Where does the course lead?
The course will train you in an analytical way of thinking that is valued by employers and transferable to many other areas, including financial and management training. Physics is necessary for university courses such as Engineering, Geophysics, Electronics, Biophysics, Astrophysics, Astronomy and Particle Physics.
Assesment Breakdown
Examination = 100%
Component 1 – Examination: Modelling Physics (2 hours, 15 minutes – 37%)
- Multiple choice and structured questions on Modules 1,2,3 and 5
Component 2 – Examination: Exploring Physics (2 hours, 15 minutes – 37%)
- Multiple choice and structured questions on Modules 1,2,4 and 6
Component 3 – Examination: Unified Physics (1 hour, 30 minutes – 26%)
- Structured questions on all modules including practical skills
There is also a “practical endorsement” which is graded pass or fail but does not effect the A Level grade.
