Criminology

(Equivalent to 1 A Level)

This course has been designed to provide you with the underpinning knowledge of the types of crime that take place in our society; why people may commit crime and how we control and punish criminality. It combines elements of psychology, sociology and law. This knowledge is then applied to authentic case studies giving you the opportunity to develop essential critical thinking, analytical and communication skills. Assessment is through a combination of two written examinations and two centre-marked assignments.

What skills will I develop?

You will learn skills required for independent learning, as well as the application of this in vocational contexts.

You will develop your problem solving abilities, project based research, development and presentation skills, as well as a range of generic and transferable skills.

What topics will I study?

WJEC Applied Diploma

  • Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime
  • Unit 2: Criminological Theories
  • Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom
  • Unit 4: Crime and Punishment

Where does the course lead?

Many students progress to University to study in Criminology, Political Science, Sociology, Law or other subjects.

The qualification also allows learners to gain the required understanding and skills to be able to consider employment within some aspects of the Criminal Justice System, Law or Police (eg. the National Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service or the National Offender Management Service).
